I think you showed and proved the point you were trying to argue. BCS takes ND because they can make more money from them and their fanbase which is the whole argument. I look at ND in 2011 and they are highly ranked, as usual, in the preseason before dropping the first 2 games and winning 2 very ugly games after. Why does a team A deserve to play instead of team B? I personally have a problem with ND fans defending the loophole created for them to get into bowls, even though they make less than conference teams in a bowl game, doesn't mean that they aren't making money more often than most other teams out there. No it isn't ND's fault its clever marketing but defending it is silly at best, bowls should be determined by performance not dollars and cents. You can point to specific years when ND was the best and deserved their bowl shot but I think everyone here knows that there are many times in recent years where that wasn't the case.

I blame the media and BCS system, it was created to make money, not to serve as the best system for college football to be fair and spout a definitive national champion. I believe there is a way for a true national champion to be determined while still making a fair amount of money for all parties.

People just don't understand the BCS is there so every bowl game maximizes profits. If I was Stanford who would I want to play in the fedex bowl ? Notre Dame or Wisconsin. Notre Dame is huge money.

Austin,

Thanks for the question. Unfortunately, I don't have data that will directly answer it. There is no run-after-catch information directly available in the play-by-play and no indirect way to tease it out.

That said, my recollection of the big play offense under Weis with Clausen, et. al. is that it wasn't screens and short passes with big run-after-catch yardage added on---Weis didn't run a West Coast offense or a screen-heavy spread offense by any stretch.

That doesn't, however, mean the receivers weren't contributing to the explosive plays. Most of the big gains for Clausen were "jump balls" to Tate and Floyd. Clausen correctly identified the one-on-one coverage (at least most of the time), lobbed it up, and let the height of Floyd and/or athleticism of Tate do the rest. The best example I can think of is Tate's touchdown reception at the end of the first half against Washington State in 2009.

How many of Clasuen's big gain passing plays do you think were a result of screen and short passes made big by his recievers? A coworker of mine argues that how the majority of big plays occured. I disagree but is that accurate?

I agree with Ernie's last point- even if the Irish don't get an automatic bid, as long as they're eligible for a BCS berth (I believe top 14?) they're going to get selected.

@jstine

I sure appreciate your enthusiasm. :D No doubt this year's class has the ability to make a big splash.

Re: Bennett Jackson

I agree that moving Jackson to corner is a great move. He loves tackling, is speedy and has good hands. However, two things:

1. Brian Kelly really didn't have any other choice. Not that Jackson's not the best fit, but someone HAD to be moved and he was the likeliest candidate. So I'm not sure there is that much genius involved really.

2. I am somewhat worried that Jackson may love gunning for the tackle and playing aggressively perhaps a bit *too* much. Let's hope he is as good at coverage come fall as he is fast.

We're going to see an unprecedented number of freshman making an impact this season. Kelly has had a plan in place since day 1 and this is the first class of players that he has at his disposal that all fit somewhere into that plan. This class will go down in history as the class that truly brought the Irish back to being an elite program.

On a side note, Bennett Jackson is going to become a star in the defensive backfield. His tackling ability and speed, and especially the combination of both, on special teams this past season should put to rest all thoughts of this being a desperation move on Kelly's part. This was a great move.

No doubt. I think he would've made more lists had our kicking game been in worse shape. Fact of the matter is that David Ruffer is an extremely competent option.

I think the only place you're likely to see Brindza in the fall is on kickoff duty. Which isn't to say he won't be making a contribution, but likely less than some of the other true freshman.
